Interesting bit of reading I found on another thread on current events (specifically around the meat packing industry being forced to remain open, and workers getting snitched on by employers if they refuse to come back to work out of fear of illness) -

I certainly wasn’t around back then, and suspect neither were any/most of you ;) History buffs may already know this, and maybe you guys studied this in depth in history class (I didn’t go to school in the US so this is eye opening to me).
I can’t imagine how something like this would go over in the current political environment.

The rough and rugged real men patriots and their banshee other halves who rally for “freedom” with flamboyantly displayed guns and loser flags aren’t going to react well when told they can’t eat all they want when they want. They are already up in arms about not being able to patronize restaurants they never patronized anyway.

Modern A mericans don’t have the mindset to accept things like ration cards and a segregated military

Yup. The so-called patriots of today are almost the exact opposite of who we refer to as patriots from the past.
Typically it involved making immense sacrifices for the good of the country - that’s pretty much what the word means. But today the term has been co- opted to suggest that supreme selfishness is what defines this country and is what it’s all about.

Fun fact: The WWII Museum maintains a Victory Garden on the museum grounds. It’s maintained by volunteers and includes signage that tells visitors about the different kinds of plants that were commonly found in Victory Gardens.

Yeah, it one fact that always stands out for me is that, after WW2, the Germans stopped rationing YEARS before the British. So much for “to the victors, the spoils”...

My grandmother supposedly was on a long drive to visit my grandfather at base camp or something and had to sweet talk a couple gas station attendants to get enough gas to make it. I’m told she was pretty maverick by the standards of the time.

when my grandmother passed a few years ago, we found a ton of stuff she’d kept from way back then that we had no idea she had. Amongst them was some of the ration books my grandfather’s family had. and notice the warning on the cover, fucking around with this stuff was a $10,000 fine. IN 1943. kind of puts “I can’t get a haircut” in perspective.

Part of the problem were huge numbers of men were occupying Germany, in addition to bad harvests in 46

Speaking from the grandstand. It’s honestly amazing that you have an awesome country absolutely destroying itself with political, social, and economic divides.
‘Rona should have brought your country together, not act as another catalyst to continue the pushes to the wings.

I didn’t read toilet paper in there anywhere. I still can’t figure out how the mass hysteria about TP started.
Yeah, times were very different then. Some things for the good, and some not so good. History, it’s not just a nap time during the school day, it’s important for perspective.

Wow, what an amazing reminder to have of what your family has been through. As a society having better perspective to what those before us have been through/sacrificed/done would go a long way towards making us more humble and caring people towards our fellow human beings.

Absolutely. Where are you based?
I didn’t grow up in the US - and during this time I find myself questioning my life decisions to an extent. My home country is all kinds of fucked up in a million different ways, but it’s pretty amazing to see how resilient they are being with this pandemic. And total deaths can be counted on your two hands thus far as a result (much smaller country, but we’re still talking 22 million people most of them in a handful of densely packed cities). There’s immense levels of hardship, but for the most part people and the government helping each other putting lives above all else.

To your North.
I completely understand. The past 9mo here in Canada have been extremely interesting. Our recent election last year showed a huge political divide in our country and our leader was not elected by the popular party vote. A few months after the greens went eco warrior and began protest blocking trade at port and railways because of decisions about a oil pipeline. Then March happened... And a huge majority of Canadians put aside all this BS.
Both the leading parties and the opposition began working together at all levels to help all Canadians. The media and the public followed suit. I’ve always ragged on our governments, but honestly, all across the country they stepped up to the plate and really delivered.
Most citizens will agree with what they did, and what they are doing is exceptional no matter if we voted for them or not. It’s a dark time but i
t’s been decades since the country has been this harmonious and unified.
All I can say is that I hope the divides don’t get the better of public in the coming months
and
hinder the battle against Covid in the US.

I really hope so too but don’t have much faith. I’m just hopeful that we will have a massive wave of change come November, but again not hopeful for that either especially if this situation keeps getting worse and everything is askew.
Sadly I feel like many people’s lives will be lost or ruined, others will somehow scrape by, and a tiny minority will reap immense profits off the “recovery”. For decades a huge portion of this country has been told over and over again that government is bad, shown this is the case through purposeful mismanagement, and that watching out for anyone but yourself is evil socialism. As a country we have so many resources and the ability to limit lives lost and ensure as many people as possible get through this with as little damage as possible, paving the way for a great recovery across the board. But that’s not what we want - as a country we’ve decided that it’s better to have a worse human toll, and weaker recovery, but one that will be more profitable for those at the top of the food chain.
p.s. your comment about Trudeau reminds me of what’s happening in Germany with Merkel as well. Her polling numbers were low, wasn’t even expected to run for another turn - but really stepped up to the plate with this disaster bringing the empathy and fact based decisiveness that was needed, and it has all paid dividends in her popularity right now.

I feel like this is some place I didn’t even know of that I’m going to have to visit someday.
We have a victory garden of sorts of our own going right now, we’ve been growing stuff for the last few years but this year certainly it’s going to provide us a lot more than it typically has (lettuce, spinach, peas, green beans, summer squash, pumpkin, carrots, beets, potatoes, and lots and lots of tomatoes ). If anything it’s a good distraction and something enjoyable to do outside while there isn’t much else but dread to pay attention to in the world around us.

I found an old WWII ad that made me think about how that generation responded to the challenge, wrote a bit about it rationing and sacrifice.
